The Industrial Property Office of Iran (IPO) has announced that since 18 November 2012, all trademark applications must be submitted online. All applicants who intend to submit an application to register a trademark in Iran must use the Office’s electronic filing system.

The launch of the dedicated e-filing website marked a fundamental shift in Iranian trademark practice. Paper-based applications were phased out in favour of a centralised online platform through which applicants and agents could file new applications, upload specifications and representations, pay official fees, and track prosecution status.

Requirements for electronic filing

Applicants must register on the IPO portal and complete the online application form, including classification of goods and services, upload of the mark representation, and payment of filing fees. Supporting documents such as powers of attorney and company registration certificates must be submitted within the deadlines prescribed by the Office.

  • All new trademark applications must be filed electronically—paper filings are no longer accepted.
  • Applicants should prepare mark images and specifications in advance according to IPO technical requirements.
  • Foreign applicants typically appoint a local agent and provide a legalised power of attorney.
  • Portal registration and fee payment are mandatory steps before an application receives a filing date.
